Our Master of Arts Photography course is a postgraduate course in photography, that is the first of its kind in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. It has a strong practice-based approach with extensive networks in photography and related creative industries and communities.

The Master of Arts Photography program is designed to launch your career on the national and international stage.

The program will prepare you for a professional career in a range of creative industry roles. It will equip you to move into higher level professional roles in photography, multimedia, visual journalism, photographic publishing and/or curatorial and project management. In particular, it can also provide you with the necessary qualification to pursue a career in academia and teaching photography and other related creative industries.

The program is flexible and engaging allowing you to achieve your professional goals and expand your practice in a supportive and world-leading environment.

As a Master of Arts Photography student at Australia’s number one photography institution, you will join a network of international photographers, photographic academics, publishers, curators, festival directors and writers that will enable you to take your practice onto the world stage.

In a collegiate environment, you will immerse yourself in your passion for photography as you create new work while exploring contemporary photographic ideas, cultures, theories and innovative practices. Whether you are interested in expanding your existing career or establishing an academic teaching career in photography and the related visual arts, our Master of Arts Photography postgraduate program is the right program for you.

Program entrance requirements

  • For entry into the Master of Arts Photography, applicants must meet specific academic and/or professional entrance requirements.

  • Applicants should normally possess a Bachelor with Honours or Bachelor Degree qualification or equivalent.*

  • Applicants without formal qualifications but with significant experiential learning/professional experience are also encouraged to apply.*

* a formal Recognition of Prior Learning application may be necessary to assess applicants academic, professional standing and ability to undertake studies at this level.

Application, interview and folio presentation

All applicants must complete a Master of Arts Photography Application Form

Once submitted, you will be contacted to arrange the next steps of your application, which may include:

  • Examples of previous photographic work

  • Certified copies of previous qualifications and transcripts

  • If applying for Recognition of Prior Learning, you may also be asked to provide the name and contact details of two referees.

All domestic applicants must apply directly using the Master of Arts Photography Application Form.

All applicants will be invited for an interview. The interview is a way for us to get to know you, for you to present your photographic work, and to talk about your career goals and motivations. Following the interview, you may also be asked to provide additional evidence or examples of professional practice.

Recognition of prior learning and credit transfer

PSC will ensure that all prospective students with relevant prior experience (RPL) or academic studies (credit transfer) are advised of the possibility of having this prior experience and/or studies taken into consideration.

Application Requirements

If you are an international student, you should refer to the International Student Guide for detailed program entrance requirements, English language proficiency and selection criteria.

All applicants must ensure they complete the PSC Master of Arts Photography International Application Form.

Offers for international students

Offers are made following the completion of Entry Requirements.

Direct offers are made to successful applicants after completion of an interview and application assessment process, including;

  • Short biography (50 words)

  • 20-30 images

  • CV

  • The name and contact details of two referees

Enrolment

Enrolment requires payment of a one off administration fee of $1000 AUD.

Recognition of prior learning and credit transfer

  • Confirm your ability to meet the tuition fee and related costs of living in Australia.

Australian Citizens may apply for FEE-HELP.

FEE-HELP is not available for international students. International Student tuition fees are paid up-front on a per-trimester basis. International students are not required to pay more than 50% of the tuition fees before the course starts. However, they can pay for the full tuition fee if they wish to do so.

When you accept your offer and complete your enrolment form, you also choose your tuition fee payment option.

FEE-HELP Tuition Fee Assistance

PSC is an approved FEE-HELP provider.

FEE-HELP is a government loan scheme that assists eligible fee paying students with loans to pay all or part of their tuition fees. It cannot be used for additional study costs such as equipment and materials, accommodation, living expenses or other costs. It is available to Australian Citizens or holders of a permanent humanitarian visa who are enrolled in a higher education course.

FEE-HELP is available for eligible students for the tuition fees for the Master of Arts Photography course. Policies for students enrolled in the Master of Arts Photography course including the specific policies that relate to FEE-HELP

Scholarships are available for eligible participants. All graduates of undergraduate courses at Photography Studies College are eligible for the Graduate Scholarship Program. Ask us for more information.

The Master of Arts Photography program introduces an innovative and cutting-edge curriculum targeted at practicing mid-career photographers, videographers, designers, curators and other visual artists. It supports expansive opportunities to pursue a significant volume of work in a creative collegiate community of practice. It also provides the entry-level qualification for those of you who are seeking to establish an academic teaching career at a higher education institution or university in Australia or internationally.

Through scholarship and research, a whole new approach to your current practice becomes possible. You will be enabled to develop a critical awareness of contemporary modes of presentation and distribution of visual content in addition to gaining expanded knowledge of contemporary trends and developments in the broader creative industry fields.
