Life's journey is made from memories that are like treasures we carry with us. Occasionally, the sound and smell of a diesel engine takes me back to the time when I was confined inside a tiny fishing boat while escaping Vietnam, our only possessions, the clothes we wore. The sight of a tin of Ayam brand sardines reminds me of the weekly food quota for each family in the refugee camp, and an old family photograph allows me to reminisce about a moment in the past.
Memories may not define us, but they are part of us. They can be as clear as blue sky, or faded into the distance as stars in the night sky. Sometimes memories can be frozen treasure, waiting to be uncovered. Upon surfacing, they do not discriminate; they can fill our hearts with joy, gratitude or sorrow.
