Summary

Introduction to Bookbinding

The course is designed for those interested in the introductory aspects of bookbinding traditional methods. You will undertake practical exercises in bookbinding , guided by experienced staff. You will complete progressive projects of increasing difficulty in Western Binding methods. You will complete a two hand bound books and/or a slipcase.

 

Course content

  • Grain direction
  • Sewing techniques of text blocks including tape method and French link 
  • Paper decoration
  • Edge decoration
  • End banding
  • Casing in
  • Endpaper attachments
  • Tilting

 

What you will make

  • Case binding book (western traditional binding hardcover book) / slipcase
  • Half bound Book  (western traditional binding hardcover book)

 

All required materials and tools are provided (except for Endpapers and Bookcloth). The details of purchasing Endpapers and Bookcloth will be covered in the sessions.

Lecturers

Michelle (Mitch) Lackenby lectures in the areas of Graphic Design, Advertising and Photography and has always been obsessed with pushing the boundaries of art and design within the realm of paper and bookbinding.

She has over 20 years industry experience running her own businesses specialising in artist services, design and creative workshops. She is the Creative Director of Paperazzi Design studio, overseeing branding, commissions, photo shoots, and art/design direction.

Mitch is also an expert Paper Engineer for Pedigree Papers.
