STUDENT: Emily Goulsbra, 3rd Year Full Time  - Commercial Major
ASSIGNMENT: Work in progress/Folio
COMMENT: I have a soft spot for a man with a mustache (don’t ask me why, I just do) and love portraiture, so it only seemed natural to combine the two for my folio. I also like to have an element of humour in my work, so we decided to work a milk-mustache for this shoot. It was incredibly difficult to get a perfect foamy upper lip, but the final result was quite satisfying.

Artecyle is an exhibition of sculptures and installations, using reclaimed materials that explores themes of environmentalism and sustainability. Inspired by the venues’ history and a non-acquisitive prize pool of $14,000, it attracts artists from all over Australia.

Artecycle 2012 will be judged by Doug Hall, AM, Australian Commissioner, Venice Biennale, 2011 and former director of the Queensland Art Gallery.

Artecycle 2012 and will feature 27 works to exhibit inside the gallery and in the surrounding grounds.

Winners will be published when they have been announced on 17 May 2012.

STUDENT: Darcy Barrow, 3rd Year Full Time  - Art Major
ASSIGNMENT: Work in progress/folio
COMMENT: Since the start of college I have been obsessed with the constructed landscape in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, looking especially at constant redevelopment and contrasts of new and old.
I continually scout locations and look for a banality and isolation that I feel encapsulates the soul of the area itself.
I want the viewer to ask questions about the purpose of the area and how it relates to us as inhabitants; how it excludes us from what was once a natural area.
This particular image is the newest in a series for my final year art folio, a continuation of something I have been exploring since the start of PSC.
I see this photo as a stepping stone into my series for the year, which is an exciting prospect!

STUDENT: Donna Stevens, 3rd Year PT
ASSIGNMENT: 3rd Year, 1st Semester Project (Curves of Life)
COMMENT: Inspired by a trip to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, I decided to recreate Dante Gabriel Rossetti paintings in the modern day portrait medium.
I didn’t realise what a production it would be to build a wall of flowers… until it was too late to turn back.

Alice McMillan-Drendel comes from Rainbow.
She had told me about the large number of abandoned properties and houses in the area.
They could not be ignored – so for her 1st year semester B major project, Alice decided to document these homes.
As it turns out, this work caught the attention of the producer of ABC Open – Larissa Romensky who has interviewed Alice regarding this project.

This series explores the meeting point between reality and fantasy. The juxtaposition of photo and painting simultaneously unifies and exaggerates the disparity of the subject to her surroundings, as we, the viewer make the journey ourselves into and out of reality.

It is the largest event of its kind in Australia and the second largest in the world.” (See their website for more info)

Sharon’s image “Bold Commitment” will be screened as part of the festival exhibition in a slide show that runs from 5 May to 3 June in Sydney. This semester, Sharon is also working on an exciting concept with nudes and is about to undertake a shoot on location at Daylesford’s Convent Gallery.

Congratulations Sharon! It’s great to see your passion and hard work paying off for you. We are looking forward to seeing more results from your efforts later this semester.
